If you want to squeeze the last of the love out of the Rio Olympics get on down to Waitrose. Leblon Cachaca is available on a special introductory offer of a crazy £22. Crazy, because Selfridges stock it at an eye watering £44 and Amazon have it at its more usual £35 mark.
Leblon is one of the premium brands of cachaca. And cachaca is the Brazilian spirit behind the excellent Caipirinha cocktail, the classic taste of Brazil. It’s been difficult to find good cachaca in the Uk and this is a real find. Some brands we usually see here are more rocket fuel than fine rum based spirit so get a bottle of this while you can.
Cachaca differs from most rums as its made from the distilled juice of the sugar cane rather than refined molasses. It makes for a more raw taste but one that’s often more natural to the plant than the more controlled style of most rums. In fact the rum equivalent, rhum agricole, is worth hunting down too … but perhaps that’s best saved for another post.
Suffice to say that cachaca is typically a lighter spirit than its rum cousins making it ideal for the citrus heavy caipirinha.
